Mathematical Operations - Balancing Inequalities

Balancing the Equation or Inequality: In these type of problems we have been given certain symbols of letters representing the various operators. The candidate is required to substitute the required operators and then identify the correct option.

Illustration: If times stands for addition, < stands for subtraction, + stands for division, > stands for multiplication, - stands for equal to, div stands for greater than and = stands for less than, then which of the following will be true?

A. 3times4>2-9+3<3                      B. 5times3<7div8+4

C. 5> 2+2=10<4times 8                    D. 3times 2<4div16>2+4

Answer: C

Sol.  Using the proper notations in (3), we get the statement as follows:

5times 2div2<10-4+8;or;5times 1<18-4;or;5<14, which;is;true

Illustration: In the statement different alphabets stand for various symbols as indicated in the table :

Addition: OSubtraction: MMultiplication:ADivision: Q
Equal to: XGreater than: YLess than: Z

Out of the four alternatives given in these questions, only one is correct according to the above letter symbols. Identify to correct answer.

A.  8 Q 4 A 1 M 2 X 16 M 16                        B.  8 O 2 A 12 Q 10 X 18 Q 9

C.  6 Q 2 O 1 O 1 X 16 A 1                          D.  2 O 3 M 4 Q 2 Z 1 A 2

Answer: A

Solution:  Using the proper notations in option A, we get the statement as :

                   8 div 4 times 1 - 2 = 16 - 16 ;; or ;; 0=0, ;; which ; is ; true.
